Michele Koomen

Artist Bio & Description: Hand Shucked 4 Good is run by textile sewist Michele Koomen in the North Beach area of Port Townsend, WA. Michele is a life long sewist who moved from clothing and design into producing practical and functional “hand shucked” pouches, wallets, electronic cases (tablets) and totes, to name just a few. Michele combines fabrics that are rich in minimalist modern designs inspired by the natural world and vibrant geometric designs for her pouch, wallet, tote, electronic cases (tablets) and backpack collection. Many of the fabrics used by Michele are upcycled collected from thrift shops in the form of discarded clothing, linens, draperies and yardage. Michele’s business is philanthropic where all profits are donated back to local and regional non-profits, most recently Jefferson County Master Gardeners.

At her studio, visitors will view her studio set up with both domestic and industrial sewing machines, cutting tools and a glimpse of some of the prized textiles she uses. Additionally, Michele will provide a display of the various steps she uses in putting her versatile carry alls together. She will demonstrate various components of bag construction to visitors, including where to source sewing supplies, notions and high quality fabrics. Visitors will tour the studio displays both indoor and outdoor, weather permitting, including on an outdoor deck. A wide variety of bags will be available for purchase.
