Kathy Fridstein
Artist Bio & Description: Raised just outside Chicago, I began taking photographs as a child, mostly during summer family road trips in the Western U.S. It was these trips that cemented my awe and respect for the history and vast beauty of the American landscape and sparked my lifelong interest in using photography to explore the intimate relationship between myself and the environment.
I received my MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Upon graduation I began a 35-year career of teaching in the Pacific Northwest and showing my art. My work has been widely exhibited at regional and national venues, including the Seattle Art Museum, where it was prominently featured in a three-person show “Altered Images.” My work is also included in numerous public art collections, including the 1% Washington Public Art Purchase, University of Washington Medical Center, and the Seattle Public Utilities Purchase.
I feel lucky to have a beautiful studio in Port Townsend where I focus on my art practice. With the beach, the woods, Fort Worden and her sister forts Flagler and Casey close by, I am photographing my surrounding landscape, hoping my images shed light on our intimate relationship with our history and the environment.
In my studio I will be showing photographs from current and past bodies of work.
