Rufina C. Garay

Artist Bio & Description: Rufina is a painter, children's book illustrator, poet, food writer, culinary artist, and practitioner of Taoist meditative arts in which poetry is a healing practice and art is alchemy.

She is currently tugging at the thread of a "perfectly imperfect" painting process using watercolor, gouache, and acrylics on different surfaces and is exploring impermanence through rudimentary Chinese calligraphy using non-traditional media to spotlight important I Ching hexagrams on fragile, burnt paper.

She is also beginning a child's study of color unfettered by traditional ways of seeing through her abstract works inspired by her son's Easter Eggs and artwork.

Her current writing projects include a chapbook with a Salish Sea perspective on the Uvalde mass shooting, a poetry workbook-DIY guide through rage as a form of self-care and social justice, and her food memoir, Recipes for a Saucy Life, a chronicle of the culinary journey from the mind to heart, head to hands, across and in spite of cultural expectations of first-generation-immigrant children and their parents' dreams for them.

She is the founder of Shattering Glass, an ever-evolving curation of established and emergent poets from the Olympic Peninsula who amplify social and environmental justice issues. She hosts www.recipeswithrufina.com and a podcast, FoodLove: The Space Between Terroir and the Tao of Food which can be downloaded from iTunes/Apple Podcasts.
