Artist Bio & Description: The places that speak to me emotionally through memory's lens, the physicality of place and the ephemera of light, shadow, and color- all are my inspiration. Tempered by imagination and memories embellished though time, my paintings capture a sense of being fully engaged with a meaningful place out of my past. They are a visual diary of dreams and recollection-an emotional testament to places that I have been and places I have imagined.
In 2022, I expanded my painting practice to Nihonga (Japanese painting) after having taken a 5 day intensive workshop in this medium prior to a month long artist residency in Kyoto in September, 2022.
What I discovered in Japan was an affinity between Nihonga and practices I adopted in pastel- layering with pigments, capturing light and the movement/ expressiveness of brush work. I love working with water and traditional Japanese materials- washi paper, pigments, gofun (bleached ground oyster shell) - all applied with hake/fude brushes. I am taking classes in calligraphy and sumi-e to refine how I hold the brush, expand my repertoire of mark-making and hone my capability to paint simply, expressively and abstractly.
