Elissa Greisz
Artist Bio/Description: Elissa Freemon Greisz (b. Santa Barbara, CA, lives and works in Port Townsend, WA) came of age artistically during the Los Angeles art scene of the 1960s and 70s. After graduating in pictorial arts at UCLA, she became immersed in the era's radical creative culture through happenings, feminist art gatherings connected to Womanspace, and explorations beyond traditional painting into abstraction, collage, sculpture, and unconventional materials. During the 1970s, Greisz exhibited widely in Southern California, including solo exhibitions at Orlando Gallery in Los Angeles. Over the following decades, she developed a distinctive visual language associated in part with the Pattern and Decoration movement, creating sculptural wall works, collages, and repoussee using recycled aluminum inspired by medieval ornamentation, sci-fi illustration, tattoos, jewelry, and her Mexican heritage. Greisz has exhibited throughout California, Colorado, and the Pacific Northwest and recently with a solo show at Peninsula College and a 2-person show last year at Northwind Art. Her work is included in collections such as the Denver Art Museum, UCLA Medical Center, and the Washington State Art Collection. In the 80s and 90s she maintained studios in Seattle and Tacoma, collaborating with her daughter, Jennifer West, while participating in artist-run spaces such as SOIL, Bumbershoot, and the Washington State History Museum.
Her studio will have work from different stages of her career as well as current work.
